Temperament:
In the hands of a responsible owner, a well-trained and socialized Rottweiler can be a reliable, alert dog and a loving companion. In general, Rottweilers are fond of children, very devoted, quick to learn, and eager to please. They thrive on mental stimulation. They can be strong-willed, however, and should thus be trained in a firm, fair, and consistent manner. Rottweilers respond readily to a clear and benevolent leader. Rottweilers are playful animals who may frequently demand attention from their owners.
Grooming:
The smooth, glossy coat is easy to groom. Brush with a firm bristle brush and bathe only when necessary. This breed is an average shedder.
Origin:
The Rottweiler is probably descended from the Italian Mastiff. During the Middle Ages, it was used as a herd dog. It was bred in the German town of Rottweil in Wurttemberg. Practically extinct in the 1800's, the breed population began a comeback in the early twentieth century due to the efforts of enthusiastic breeders centered in Stuttgart. Some of the Rottweilers talents include: tracking, herding, watchdog, guarding, police work, carting, competitive obedience, and schutzhund.
